The 1st MD have been invited by the 53 PA to join them at their winter drill in Landis Valley. The event will consist of drilling and some class room instruction. We will have access to the Yellow Barn throughout the day as well as the auditorium in the museum for any classroom-type activities we decide to conduct. The log house, stone tavern (beside our typical summer camp) and the fire house will be at our disposal as well. The fire house will be occupied during the day for a private party but will be available for sleeping if anyone wishes to use a modern heated building. The log house is only heated by the fireplace. We’ve slept in there a number of times but it can stay rather chilly on the “living side” of the house. We can also use an outdoor fire pit during the day for coffee and lunch. We basically have the site to ourselves although there may be a few visitors wandering around depending on the weather. We can do a company mess in the stone tavern if enough people are interested. We are not planning any drill for Sunday at his time. We typically head out after breakfast and clean-up. Please be at the site and ready to go by 9:00am on Saturday and we’ll go until roughly 3:00pm then start hauling firewood to warm up the period buildings and prepare for supper. Depending on the weather, modern boots are fine. This is just for us, not for the public. We have been there with eight inches of snow on the ground and single digit temps so dress accordingly. Dress for the event is union infantry full field kit, sack or frock coat, light blue trousers, leathers, canteen, haversack and musket. Bring great coats if you have them.
